England beat Iran 6-2 on the first day to top Group B with three points. Wales and the USA, who drew on Monday, secure one point, but Iran hold the group together.

If England score another three points, they will qualify for the Round of 16 and remain top of the table.

If Wales draw with Iran, the win could even seal their qualification as group winners.

The head-to-head record is the third tie-breaking method in this tournament, after goal difference and scoring.

If Wales beat Iran and go into the final match against England on four points, Wales could win Matchday 3 to overtake England, regardless of how England deal with the United States. .

Iran were expected to provide England with a much tougher test than they managed on Monday, but striker Mehdi Taremi delivered an impressive performance given the circumstances of that 6-2 defeat. showed his threat.

He showed his instinctive one-touch finish ability with the opening goal, and showed his composure to sink the PK in injury time in the second half.

He led the team’s attacking stats and stats showed they were able to find him quickly when they got the ball back despite Iran having just 22% of possession in the match. Iran likely have more possessions against Wales, but expect them to look for him at every opportunity.

And for good reason. Taremi has been in the Champions League this season, in which he has scored five goals in five appearances, and here in club and country, where he has scored 16 goals in 13 appearances, he is in good shape. is good.

His stats at Porto this season show how dangerous he is in the box. He has six goals and five assists to his name in the league this season, whether shooting himself or setting up his teammates. He may have lost more aerial battles than won, but he added a lot to the Portuguese side’s front line and became a prominent striker in Europe.

He has some stories too. Taremi was a latecomer developer. He’s 30 now, but it wasn’t until he was 22 that he played in his flight to the top of Iran, and he wasn’t allowed to go to Europe until he was 27.

He is familiar with this World Cup environment, having had a stint in Qatar in between, but his 62 goals in 115 appearances for Porto include the league record during the 2021/22 double crown season. 20 goals included. This is a player who has really arrived now.

Will there be a next step in his career? Discussions about him could heat up in January, but for now his focus is on extending his record of 30 goals in 61 appearances against Iran against Wales. It is in…
