Search for healthcare providers

published to August 11, 2014

Choosing the right provider is one of the most important health care decisions you’ll make. We can help you find the right one.

Remember, what you are looking for is a provider you can trust and work with to improve your health and well-being. Take some time to think about what you need. Depending on the complexity of your medical needs, you may need to consult more than one type of health care provider.

Primary healthcare provider: For most health issues, talk to your primary care provider first. They will work with you to get recommended screenings, help manage chronic conditions, and refer you to other types of health care providers when needed. They may be called internists, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants. Your child or teenager’s provider may be called a pediatrician.

Specialist: You will be shown a specialist for a particular service or for treating a particular condition. Specialists include cardiologists, oncologists, psychologists, allergists, podiatrists, and orthopedic surgeons. Before going to a specialist, you may need a referral from your primary care provider in order for your medical plan to pay for the visit.

Here are some tips for finding a provider in your area.

  • If you already have a provider you like and would like to continue using it, call that provider’s office and ask if they accept coverage.
  • Call your insurance company or state Medicaid and CHIP programs. Visit their website or check the member handbook to find a healthcare provider in your network who has your health insurance coverage.
