A San Francisco Police Department proposal could allow cops in the city to use remote-controlled robots to kill suspects.

A draft detailing the controversial proposal says lethal robotic force would be allowed if there was a lethal threat to civilian police officers. A local outlet reported this week.

Critics, including Tiffaney Moyer, a senior staff attorney with the San Francisco Bay Area Civil Rights Lawyers Commission, lashed out at the proposal.

Moyer told Mission Local, “We are living in a bleak future where we debate whether police can use robots to execute citizens without trials, juries or judges. I am doing,” he said.

“No legal professional or general resident should carry on as if it were the norm,” Moyer added in an email to the outlet.

The agency has 17 robots deployed, but they have never been used to attack individuals, a police spokesperson said.
