FOXBORO — The patriot With Wednesday having to clear a roster spot, the team decided to get creative.
The deal was reported at head coach Bill Belichick’s morning press conference, but he did not confirm the news.
When asked if he could confirm the transaction, Belichick said, “No, but when I can, I will.”
Herron was selected in the 6th round of the 2020 draft and has grown to be one of the Patriots’ top backup tackles. He has appeared in 12 games as a rookie in 2020 and has started six. He appeared in all 16 games last season and started four. He played in both games for the Patriots this season, but he didn’t play the snap.
Herron loses spot with Patriots
This summer, Herron lost to Yodny Kajustuto in a battle for the Patriots’ top backup tackle spot. Kajouste made his debut against the Dolphins in Week 1 of 2022, substituting for Isaiah Wynn at right tackle. The Patriots added veteran tackle Marcus Cannon to their practice squad last week, who started four games in Houston last year before ending the season with a back injury.
How Equale’s suspension affected trades
But the team’s tackle depth isn’t the only reason to trade Heron. Wednesday marked the deadline to get the defensive tackle Daniel Equare onto his 53-man roster for the Patriots. Équare started the season with a two-game suspension. The reason has not been announced by the NFL, nor by the players.
Equale appeared in seven games for the Patriots last season. He finished with five tackles and two sacks. The 28-year-old defensively adds depth in his tackles to the roster alongside Davon Godshaw, Lawrence Guy, Christian Barmore and Carl Davis.
Equare was at the Patriots’ practice Wednesday. This means he has been added to his 53-man roster on the team. It would make sense for Pat to trade players for additional draft funding rather than freeing someone up to make a roster spot.
Herron will head to the new head coach’s team, where former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels knows him well. The deal would be the Pats’ second trade between Las Vegas and New England this offseason after trading quarterback Jarrett Stidham to the Raiders in May.
