The Australian star defeated his home favorite Paul Jubu 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 in an entertaining match, but one supporter was his heckler. I felt that I had exceeded the mark.
After scoring match points, Kyrgios turned to one of the stands and spit on the floor on his way to the net.
When asked by a reporter if he spit in the direction of the fan, Kyrgios replied: I don’t do that to the people who supported me.
“I’m okay to receive a lot of it [heckling].. What I don’t understand is that as soon as I returned it, I returned it, for example in Stuttgart, and I was penalized for the game.
“As soon as I won the match, I turned to him. I’ve been working on hatred and negativeness for so long that I feel like I’m not liable to that person.
“He literally came to the match and no one really supported him. He just stirred and looked down.”
Kyrgios said earlier this month that he had been racistly abused by members of the crowd at a tournament in Stuttgart. The organizers said they were investigating.
Australians said they had not been racist abused on Tuesday, but were concerned about the frequency of fan abuse.
“I’m just starting to think it’s normal, though it’s not really the case,” he told reporters. “I didn’t say anything to the crowd until they started every time I went down to the far end. I don’t know if it’s normal.
“It has nothing to do with Wimbledon. I think it’s the people of the whole generation who feel like they have the right to comment negatively on everything, like social media. It’s just in real life. It will be taken over.
“There is a fence there, and I’m in trouble, so I can’t say anything physically, and I can’t say anything, so I feel like I can say anything.”
That wasn’t the only flash point in the match. Kyrgios was also dissatisfied with the line judge’s call to the points on the opening set.
He later said at a press conference that Wimbledon referees should be younger than “actually younger people have better eyesight.”
Krigios will play doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis on Wednesday, but will continue his singles campaign with 26th seed Filip Krajinović on Thursday.
