Is Mack Jones Still “The Guy”?Here’s what Rob Ninkovich thinks originally appeared NBC Sports Boston
After a promising rookie campaign, Jones has yet to show progress in his second year.In the first two weeks of the 2022 season, he threw for 465 yards and scored two touchdowns with two interceptions. The Patriots’ offense totaled 24 points.
It’s only Week 3, sure, but Jones is under the microscope in the increasingly competitive AFC East. MVP candidate Josh Allen and the buffalo bills A favorite of the Super Bowl, miami dolphins Surrounded Tua Tagovailoa — He had 469 passing yards and six TDs on Sunday — and had a weapon. Jones needs to take the next step if the Patriots are to reach the playoffs and perform in a high-load conference.
While it’s understandable to worry about Jones, former Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovich isn’t going to panic. I explained why I still believe it could be the future of
“I still believe he’s a man,” Ninkovich said. Taking things with a grain of salt… from Josh McDaniels to new stuff or new styles, Matty P (Matt Patricia), Joe Judge, Bill Belichick, these three guys are probably making the rounds trying to implement different attack systems. New schemes, new terms, new protections. All things that as a quarterback you have to keep an eye on everything that is going on. You have to know what is coming and what will happen next.
“I don’t think they’re there yet. I don’t think they’re there in the sense that they’re on the same page. Because there is. You, the OC (attack coordinator), saw it Tom (Brady) and Josh. It’s seen across the league in coordinators and their quarterbacks, but that takes time. They are building it now and are getting comfortable with each other. I really think we should give them some time. ”
Rather than comparing Jones to elite QBs across the league, Ninkovich believes the focus should be on the promising traits the 2021 first-rounder will bring to the table.
“He’s still a very young player and he’s going through new things,” Ninkovich said. “The accuracy of the arm is there. The smarts are there. So he has all the intangibles. What people don’t see is turn on the Eagles, turn on the Bills, turn on the Ravens.” I think it’s about turning it on and turning it on.” and that’s what you want. But that’s not necessarily what you need at the moment.
“Mac Jones is a capable and smart quarterback who can put his team in a position to win football games. Want a little more speed on your throws? Of course not. still like what I see and the way he carries himself.”
