Australia’s Mark Leishman took the lead after Friday’s first round at LIV Golf Tucson with seven birdies and just one bogey.
Leishman hit 6-under 65 at Arizona’s Gallery South Course, one shot ahead of Matthew Wolfe, Mexico’s Abraham Unser and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen.
Peter Ulein, Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and Spain’s David Puig are tied for fifth at 4-under. 6 players including Kevin Na and Sergio Garcia of Spain finished 8th at 3 under par.
Leishman, who started on the fifth, birdied two of the first three holes before recording his only bogey on the par-4 11th hole.
He quickly responded with a birdie on the par-4 12th and added four more birdies the rest of the way.
“I enjoy playing golf now,” Leishman said. “Having played in the offseason without a hitch gave me a little more confidence in the shots I took and the results.
“I actually hit a good 16 putt in front of the birdie hut. I was happy to make a birdie in front of the birdie hut and get people cheering.”
Ancer and Wolff each completed no bogey rounds, including three consecutive birdies.
Oosthuizen started slowly, scoring 11 pars and a bogey to start the round. However, he closed out with six consecutive birdies from the par-4 15th hole to the par-4 second hole.
In the team competition, Torque GC, captained by Niemann and using Puig, is 10 under par.
Three teams are tied for second at 9 under. Iron Heads GC captained by Na. Fireballs GC captained by Garcia and including Unser.
