Two New Zealanders detained Iran New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Wednesday that it has been allowed to leave the country for the past few months.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Tuesday in a video broadcast live on Facebook that the New Zealand government has worked very hard over the past few months to allow them to leave Iran.
“It is no exaggeration to say that the last few months have been incredibly difficult,” Ardern said.
Neither Ardern nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade released details of the couples detained or where they were held.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the two are social media influencers Topher Richwhite and Bridget Thackwray, who post under the name Expedition Earth.
The couple’s last post was from the Tas Yol passage in Turkey 16 weeks ago.
The New Zealand government also updated its travel warning for Iran on Wednesday, urging New Zealanders currently there to leave.
A statement issued alongside the update said New Zealand continues to urge authorities to refrain from responding to demonstrations and to do more to protect women’s rights and freedom of expression.
