Inmates: 122 men, 3 women on death row in Gombe, Bauchi – NCoS | The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

According to the Nigerian Department of Corrections (NCoS), facilities in Gombe and Bauchi states house more than 125 people on death row.

NCoS officials confirmed this while responding to a Nigerian News Agency (NAN) inquiry into the death penalty in Gombe and Bauchi.

Lawal Gusau, Gombe’s head of corrections, said the service has 94 inmates, 93 men and one woman, at facilities in the state.

He said the inmates were awaiting execution.

He said the state had 1,692 inmates as of February. February 28, 2023.

He said 94 of the 1,692 prisoners were on death row and seven were survivors, with 770 convicted prisoners and 821 awaiting trial.

In Bauchi, approximately 31 death row inmates were awaiting execution in the state.

Statistics Officer, NCoS, Bauchi State Command, DSC Abdullahi Usman said the 24 prisoners were 22 men and 2 women.

He said seven men out of 24 prisoners were awaiting execution by stoning.

“Most of the people on death row in Bauchi are not natives of the state, they were brought in from other states.

“This is the result of anxiety and pressure from inmates’ families when they were held in their state of origin facility residencies,” he said.

He said the service is awaiting executive orders (EOs) by respective state governments before carrying out enforcement actions passed by the competent courts.
