The show was quick to address Jeff Garlin’s exit from the sitcom, and in the opening moments of Wednesday’s season premiere, patriarch Murray died “just a few months ago” and the family is still processing grief. He said he continued to show
Adam and Barry worked out some of their feelings in a “Field of Dreams” inspired plotline. But the real gut punch was the plotline in which Erica (Haley Orrantia) and Jeff (Sam Lerner) enlist Beverly’s (Wendy McClendon Covey) help in getting ready for nursery school.
The process forces Beverly to face Murray’s absence and her inability to go through some of his remaining belongings. She finally decided it was time to do so, and cleared out his clothes-filled closet and removed his old chair.
However, the empty space in the living room proves to be too much for her to handle, so she sets out on a mission to retrieve the item, only to find it stolen from the curb where it was left.
Efforts to find it are fruitless, but Erica wants to help her mother.
“He will always be in our hearts – chair or not,” she told Beverly.
They then enter the nursery, only to find that the chair has been robbed by Pop Pop (Judd Hirsch) and converted into a rocking chair for the baby’s room.
“This room is finally perfect,” says Erica.
