How the Bengals could have had their season ruined by the Jets from the pinnacle of Super Bowl glory

The Bengals were in midfield and one touchdown away from winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Seven months later, the Jets could effectively end the Bengals’ season in September.

One of last season’s best stories has become a cliché.long-suffering franchise unexpectedly beat the AFC It looks like the latest victim of the Super Bowl hangover.

The setback was not unexpected for Cincinnati. Even with 25-year-old Joe Burrow entering his prime, the Bengals were still struggling to get back on their feet again from many conferences featuring the Bills and Chiefs, but the Bengals have at least a chance in the playoffs to see him in the AFC’s roster. It looked like he had a chance to defend his title.

Week 1 then ended with a home loss to the Mitch Trubisky-led Steelers in overtime. Week 2 ended with the Cooper Rush-led Cowboys losing in his last second. The Bengals became the first team during the Super Bowl era to lose his first two games of the season after scoring at least one touchdown in each game.

Having started the season with losses to the Steelers and Cowboys, Joe Burrow and the Bengals already had a small chance of a Super Bowl return.

The Bengals are now trying to become the first team since 2018 to make the playoffs after losing their first two games. It’s a feat only 12 of 125 teams have accomplished since 2007, leading the sportsbook and making the Bengals his 175 favorite to miss the postseason. That would make it his third time in the past four years that a Super Bowl runner-up has missed the postseason next season.

The Bengals enter Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium as the 5-point favorites. Less than a year later, however, the Jets thrashed the Bengals in New Jersey. Mike White threw for 405 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first career startleading the Jets from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit.

“Everybody’s frustrated, but we’re not panicking,” Burrow said.

“We’re fine. We’re not worried.”

Maybe he should be.

Barrow had come to believe that the best was ahead. He is just three years away from winning Heisman his trophy and national championship, making him the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After suffering a season-ending knee injury as a rookie, he led the Bengals to their first playoff victory in 31 years, leading the team with less than 90 seconds remaining in the Super Bowl.

“We are a young team. Expect to return to this situation many times over the next few years,” said Burrow. said after the game“We accept this to energize the rest of our careers.”

But the young and talented core is crumbling countless times. Second chances are not written in the stars.

In 1984, at age 23, Dan Marino had the best quarterback season ever and his only Super Bowl appearance. The Dolphins lasted only one postseason berth over the next five years. Joe Namath was 25 when he fulfilled his Super Bowl guarantee. He played in one more postseason game. After the 1986 NBA Finals, Ralph Sampson’s knee fell apart. Shaq and Penny broke up in 1995, a year after he reached the NBA Finals. The 2012 Thunder were his second-youngest team in Finals history and never returned.

If the Bengals don’t recover this season, they have plenty of time to avoid being on that list. But their improbable playoffs have raised expectations to a level that Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and/or Lamar Jackson may not let them reach again.

The Bengals were 49 yards away from the championship. Don’t be surprised if they never approach.

quiet farewell

Oh, and you also need a cable package that includes Tennis Channel.

Roger Federer won’t get the grand farewell he deserves like Serena Williams’ send-off. Recently received at the US Open — but the 20-time Grand Slam champion will give fans a chance to say goodbye tonight in London. He will play doubles in the final match of his career alongside Rafael Nadal Faced USA’s Francis Tiafoe and Jack Sock in the Laver Cup.

“I haven’t played in a long time so I’m nervous about playing,” Federer said this week. somewhat competitive

Federer, 41, hasn’t played since losing in the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year. He was hoping to restart his career before his troublesome right knee forced the Swiss superstar to quietly end his legendary career.

“I don’t know if I can do it all, but I’ll try,” Federer said.

Much has been said about his artistry, grace and talent, but one of the most unique traits of Federer’s career is that he has been one of the greatest sportsmen of all time in the history of major sports. That he may be the only player considered the greatest player of all time. His career has only been surpassed—twice! — on the court before his career ended.

(There may be others who qualify, but I spent a long time thinking and researching other cases, but no obvious candidate emerged. In 1928 Ty Cobb When he retired, Babe Ruth ruled long enough to be considered the greatest of all time, but the Tigers star still got the highest percentage of Hall of Fame votes in the 1936 Cooperstown first class. )

Federer is arguably the most popular player of tennis’ Golden Age, but he will end his career with fewer major titles than Nadal (22) or Novak Djokovic (21). Federer beat Nadal 16-24 (4-10 at Grand Slam) and Djokovic 23-27 (6-11 at Grand Slam).
