How Posey’s ownership role could be used in the Big Giants’ offseason originally appeared NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey’s trophy case back in Georgia contains nearly every piece of hardware a big-leaguer wants to win, and the day he has to get ready to speak in Cooperstown isn’t far away. No. But there is one role in Major League Baseball that Posey has never fully mastered.

giants Posey involved him on several recruiting trips over the years, including visiting John Lester nearly a decade ago and flying to Los Angeles to meet Shohei Ohtani five years ago. . As runner-up banners began piling up in the front office, Posey joked that his recruiting days were over, but now he might be able to try it out in another role.

On Wednesday morning, the organization Posey acquired an ownership groupand it’s unclear what that means for his future in the player’s trade, but it sometimes gives them one more card to play.

Posey is a recent player who enjoys a great deal of respect from his peers, and will hold one of half a dozen board seats in an organization that’s looking to make it big this offseason.

“My recruiting record isn’t great. I have time to improve it,” Posey said in a Zoom call. “I think my role is to help where I can help. If that involves taking the time to get to know future free agents, I’d be happy to do so.”

Posey currently sits on the Board of Directors chaired by Greg Johnson. Greg Johnson spoke to reporters for the first time since Posey’s announcement, taking over as manager of the organization’s ownership group, which now includes 31 people. Director Johnson said the franchise “expects” Posey to play a key role.

“I think having someone like Buster have one-on-one discussions as part of the process is very additive to that overall process,” Johnson said.

Posey clarified that all decisions will be made by baseball operations president Farhan Zaidi, and Johnson declined to discuss the Giants’ current state or the 2022 season in detail. task. Posey’s first role is small, and the stakes are certainly small, too, given that the franchise’s valuation is well over his $3 billion.

Posey declined to provide details about his share of the pie, saying he moved his family, including four young children, to Georgia but won’t be seen at the ballpark very often. – Like Johnson, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and many others, this kind of investment without expecting Posey to get more limelight than other owners or board members with bigger stakes. You can’t make a move.

“I wish I could have announced that Buster would be on the field this year or next year, but I think this is the second best thing,” Johnson said. I think – I’ve certainly gotten to know him over the past few years – and I’m sure of all of you – I really know he’s a unique individual. Stats beyond his great play in the .He was a really quality, thoughtful person and I think added a lot of value and insight for the Giants off the competitive side of the field.

Johnson said he was shocked by the lack of trust between players and owners when he first took office.

He said the Giants would be “a stronger organization” with Posey’s participation, adding that baseball would be strengthened as well.

But if the Giants are to be stronger on the field, they need players like Posey in their playing positions. After a year of 107 wins, they’re on track to hit below .500, but Johnson said he has a commitment to be aggressive this offseason. Posey said he is “thrilled to provide insight” as the Giants pursue some big names and potentially increase salaries.

“Ultimately, as I said before, we don’t have a fixed number[of salary]yet. That’s what we think is necessary to have a competitive team on the field,” Johnson said. Told. “As you know, we have a lot of flexibility going into this offseason, and we’re very familiar with the short stops[in free agency]and who we can hit in the Bronx.

“Farhan will eventually present the numbers he proposed. We haven’t done that yet but we are certainly looking at it now and there are some gaps that need to be addressed. I am fully aware of this.
