Daniels, defensive lead West Virginia beats Virginia Tech, 33-10

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) JT Daniels pitched for 203 yards and a touchdown as West Virginia beat Virginia Tech 33-10 Thursday night.

Freshman CJ Donaldson rushed for 106 yards and West Virginia (2-2) got a strong performance from defense to win two games in a row after losing the first two.

β€œIt was a great win,” said West Virginia coach Neil Brown. This is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time since I knew this was going to be a Thursday night game.I thought we played fast.We were really physical.”

Having beaten Virginia Tech for the second straight season, the Mountaineers scored on five consecutive possessions spanning the first and second halves. Daniels’ 24-yard touchdown pass to Sam James with 11 seconds left in the first half gave the Mountaineers a 13–7 lead and they never trailed again.

“It was big,” Brown said of the score. He said, “I felt like I was in control of the game, but the scoreboard wasn’t. Really from that drive, I thought we were in control.”

The Hokies (2-2) ended within 16-10 on a Will Ross field goal with 4:19 left in the third quarter. West Virginia responded by scoring on a 6-yard run by Justin Johnson Jr. He has 14:13 left in the game. The Hokies stopped West Virginia twice on the drive, but personal foul penalties from Norell Pollard and Dax Holyfield kept the drive alive.

Penalties hampered the Hokies all night. They committed 15 for 132 yards.

“I think we put pressure on and we sort of get out of it.” should be used to pay attention to what they are doing.

“That’s how we play defense here,” Brown said. “We had an anomaly a few weeks ago against Kansas – credit to them. But that’s not how we play defense here. I thought we were closer tonight.”

Virginia Tech: The Hokies have not been good at any stage of the game and have not beaten a non-conference Power 5 team at Lane Stadium since 2009.

Donaldson’s performance marked his third 100-yard effort in four games. The 240-pound back came to West Virginia as a tight end, but the staff moved him to tailback.Behind Donaldson and Johnson Jr., who rushed for 83 yards, West Virginia amassed 218 yards on the ground. and moved to 15-2 under Brown when rushing for at least 100 yards.

When asked if he expected the Mountaineers to succeed in the rush, Daniels replied, “I always do.” It’s been the way this team has been, especially up front led by (Zach) Frazier, and I expect it to run like that every time, because there are so many great running backs.”

Thursday night’s game was the last scheduled game between Virginia Tech and West Virginia Tech. The two universities were only four hours apart. The Mountaineers would like to play more regularly, but his AD Witt Babcock of Virginia Tech has long series against in-state opponents, plus Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Arizona, Maryland and more.
