Danger! Contestant Martha Bass returned to the show on Wednesday (September 21st), 50 years after her 1972 victory. “Fifty years ago this spring, I appeared on my first daytime show with Art Fleming in New York,” the retired CPA told host Ken Jennings. She won her $40 and a set of encyclopedias (which she still has).
Going into Final Jeopardy, the veteran contestants were lagging behind. She doubled her bounty on the next question. “Perhaps the most famous photo of him haunted by paparazzi on his 72nd birthday was taken in New Jersey in 1951” – making her the show’s champion.
Bath replied, “Who is Einstein?”, changing the then score of $15,400 to $30,800. This allowed her to jump in front of former champions Emmett Stanton and Christopher Pennant.”This is far more than an encyclopedia set,” Jennings said.
Viewers celebrated Bath’s full circle moment on social media. one fan murmured“Congratulations Martha! Redemption after 50 years!
another I have written“Sad to see Emmett leaving Jeopardy so soon, but Martha Bass is very healthy and played really well. Good for her!”
Bath returned in the following episode (September 22nd) and fell behind in the finals. Michael Menkhus and Lynda Tsuboi all answered the last question correctly. The answer “What is the Rainbow Connection?” triumphed.
“I really liked Martha and wanted to see more of her. The fact that she made two Jeopardy appearances in her lifetime shows that the encyclopedia set paid off,” wrote one fan. reddit.
Another person added, “I’m not going to lie. I’m not disrespecting Michael, but I was very disappointed to see Martha lose.”
Menkhus also joined the thread, saying, “Martha and Lynda are both great competitors and people and I’m so glad I had the chance to compete with them. If you ever get the chance to see the whole thing again, check out this comment We’ll be back, but in the meantime enjoy the episodes!”
