‘Accidental Onyx and Talisman of Souls’ Review: Internet’s ‘Weird Man’ Caught in Movie Tragedy | Sundance 2023

If you’ve been on the internet long enough, you’ve come across videos of bearded men parodying news reports of bizarre events and goofy characters intersecting with normal people being interviewed. There may be No, it’s not. No, neither. The particular character I am referring to is Marcus J. Trilbury aka Onyx the Fortuitas’ “Strange Man” Andrew BowserIf you watch any of these videos, you might find yourself smiling lightly at the absurdity of his bizarre declarations and the way he says it. Whichever you watch, you’ll likely end up closing your computer and spending the day without a particularly lasting memory of what’s loosely called a web series. is not. However, as further proof that every little sketch he doesn’t need to be a nearly two-hour feature film, taking this character and putting it on a larger canvas reveals just how one-note he is. .

Collider video of the day

Lucky Onyx and Soul Talisman It’s a movie that is as long as its title. It’s a horror comedy that feels like it’s grabbing something like that. Tenacious D from The Pick of Destiny, Although it doesn’t have the wit and quirkiness required to pull it off. It’s clear that Bowser has a lot of love for this character he created, but spending nearly her two hours with Bowser is exhausting. The jokes he throws, such as the repeated joke about Onyx being a virgin, are neither silly nor clever enough to come close to laughter.

Instead, it coasts away from his quirkiness and a cast of other eccentric characters who find themselves invited to the mansion of their mystical idol, Bartok the Great, for a planned resurrection of the spirit. I will try As a premise, this might work fine. Because it’s fun to get acquainted with a random bunch of people right before danger strikes. As a matter of fact, Bowser’s feature debut experience doesn’t have the comedy-his energy or cinematic spark to justify its running time. Nothing deserves a better movie around them, except for some interesting creature effects sprinkled throughout, but nothing for us to grasp.

From the opening moments of the film, we know basically everything there is to know about Onyx’s protagonist. He is an underdog, an outcast and commonly misunderstood. Bowser gives the character depth and backstory, but it doesn’t really add anything new to the experience of watching him run into a supernatural shenanigans. The jokes that made it funny were premised on news spoofs and wacky characters who occasionally appeared in interviews.

A full movie needs more than that. Worst of all, the film screams for jokes beyond the basics of how strange Onyx and the whole situation are. You’re just forever waiting for some sort of subversion or surprise that sets the stark realization that this is what the movie really is all about. I couldn’t find the joke I needed to go on. Instead, we just see Onyx running into a spider web and making strange remarks as the film progresses slowly.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a movie made by an online creator has failed to come together in a repairable way.It was all from really hard Smosh: The Movie Creators against misguided sci-fi spoofs space cop In such a graveyard of failed features. If anything, it shows the value of distinguishing movies from internet “content” that people seek out and watch, no matter how good.

take fun nasty talk to me, that was shown in sundance film festival together Onyx of Fortune and Talisman of Souls, Created by two former YouTubers. It worked because they didn’t try to stretch concepts or characters from previous videos. We’ve created something you can play with in the world, and it’s not that Bower’s videos aren’t all that funny, or at least silly. He tried to take what works in bite-sized amounts into a full movie that never finds a coherent humor. The material makes it feel like you’re getting stuck, which makes it all the more difficult.

Whenever Onyx says lines lifted directly from one of his videos, it might shock those who already remember them, but others will wonder what exactly he did. You will be left puzzled as to what you were doing. References alone are not jokes. Especially when it’s a closed him loop to past videos of this character in different contexts. From baffling to annoying is when the film tries to lift from other much better works. There’s one of his extended sequences in particular that simply copies iconic moments from the 1988 classic. beetle juiceIt’s awkward, cringe-worthy, and doesn’t riff on it in new ways enough to rip it off in a way that’s miles away from comedy.

In terms of complete lack of mental clarity and creativity, Lucky Onyx and Soul Talisman becomes painfully clear. Rather than offering anything new, it’s built around existing characters who may have worked online, but there’s very little comedic scope required to be the centerpiece of a full feature.
