1 million fake coronavirus tests seized in warehouse by financial crime inspectors FIOD in Nijmegen on Saturday. Customs officials received information that batches of fake self-test kits were likely being held in warehouses and sought assistance from FIOD.
The test might have worked, but it was made with duplicated branding and unauthorized use of trademarks. The manufacture and trade of counterfeit goods is illegal in the Netherlands, so FIOD seized the batch. It was in the process of being demolished Saturday afternoon. It is now destroyed.
According to FIOD, the fake coronavirus test kits were manufactured in China and aimed at the German market. Cargo was sent from China to Schiphol and Maastricht-Aachen airports.
Criminal investigations into shipments are led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s division that deals with fraud and complex seizure cases.
